📰 News we're reading

1. In review: Air Guard deployment and a proposal to buy down next year's property taxes (vermontpublic.org) — Burlington readers should know that the man accused in the high‑profile shooting of Palestinian students in the city has been ruled competent to stand trial, clearing the way for the case to move forward. The same program also covers Vermont’s controversial Air Guard deployment and Gov. Phil Scott’s proposal to ease a looming 12% property tax hike.

2. Vermont cannabis businesses react to Trump directive (wcax.com) — Burlington cannabis businesses and a local attorney are weighing how Trump’s push to reschedule marijuana could ease crushing federal tax burdens while potentially empowering big pharmaceutical players. Local shop owners and clients say the change might finally allow normal business deductions and more medical research, but they’re wary about what it means for Vermont’s small, homegrown cannabis market.

3. 'A lifesaving gift:' Vermont organ donation advocates encourage people to register (mynbc5.com) — Burlington residents just saw local leaders and New England Donor Services team up downtown to spotlight the importance of registering as organ donors. With emotional stories from recipients and donor families and a proclamation from Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak, the event urged Vermonters to sign up through the DMV or national registry to help save lives.

4. South Burlington High School girls' basketball wins second straight game (mynbc5.com) — South Burlington High School’s girls’ basketball team has bounced back from an opening loss with a convincing 52-32 home win over Enosburg Falls, their second straight victory. Sophomore forward Kayla Cisse exploded for 22 second-half points, including six three-pointers, as the young, mostly underclass roster showed growing confidence and teamwork that Burlington-area fans can watch develop this season.

5. Two shot in Fairfax this morning (vermontdailychronicle.com) — Two people were seriously injured in an early‑morning shooting at a Fairfax apartment and were ultimately transferred to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington for treatment. State police say the incident appears isolated among people who knew each other, but investigators and a heavy police presence will remain in the area while they gather more information.
