Here are the top three stories today in Burlington:
- Rental scams continue in Burlington as scammers prey on residents seeking affordable housing. There were about 5,1000 different scams that occurred in 2021 with housing scams ranking seventh on the overall list. Warning signs of a housing scam include inconsistencies in ads, landlords requiring everything to be conducted online, and multiple listings for the same address. (WPTZ)
- Burlington childcare programs are struggling to fully staff during ongoing chronic staffing issues sweeping the state. The staffing issues are reportedly due to the COVID-19 pandemic but the problem seems to extend past the pandemic. Vermont reportedly has high costs and limited access to childcare programs. Departing staff is reporting burnout. (Seven Days)
- The Burlington Vermont School Board received an update on the high school construction during a brief report on Tuesday. There is currently a funding gap between what the district can bond and the cost of the high school. Currently, the district needs to figure out a way to raise an additional $35 million to cover the construction cost of $210 million. (WAMC)
