Daylight Saving Time Begins Sunday

Don't forget to set your clock forward an hour at 2 a.m. Sunday.

Get prepared to "spring forward" and set your clocks ahead one hour; Daylight Saving Time starts at 2 a.m. on Sunday.

According to History.com's "8 Things You May Not Know About Daylight Saving Time" list, Germany instituted daylight saving time on April 30, 1916 in order to conserve electricity.

While residents in Virginia and most of the United States will spring forward on Sunday, those who live in Hawaii, Arizona (not including the Navajo Nation), and in the U.S. territories of American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands do not observe daylight saving time. Those areas will keep standard time year-round.

Around the world, only about one-quarter of the world’s population, in approximately 70 countries, observe daylight saving time.

Daylight saving time (originally called "war time") was first instituted on Feb. 9, 1942, according to History.com, by President Theodore Roosevelt. However, it wasn't until 1966 when Congress passed the Uniform Time Act which created a standard time for all states to follow.
