Cunningham, Coffey Win: Arlington County Board Election Results

ARLINGTON, VA — Susan Cunningham and Maureen Coffey, the Democratic candidates for Arlington County Board, won election on Tuesday for two seats opening on the county board.

The two Democrats ran against independent Audrey Clement and Republican Juan Carlos Fierro for the two county board seats.

Cunningham and Coffey will be succeeding fellow Democrats Christian Dorsey, the current chair of the Arlington County Board, and former Board Member Katie Cristol. Both Dorsey and Cristol decided not to run for a third term on the county board.

With 54 out of 55 precincts reporting, as of 10:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Cunningham was leading with 29,604 votes, or 37.91 percent of the vote count, followed by Coffey with 27,299 votes, or 34.96 percent of the total vote count. Clement was far behind with 10,005 votes, or 12.81 percent of the vote count. Fierro had 9,817 votes, or 12.57 percent of the vote count.

“I am ready to hit the ground running, putting my executive experience and common-sense leadership to work for all of Arlington," Cunningham said in a statement Tuesday night. "Together we will get housing and planning right, reconnect our community, and ensure a responsive and efficient government."

Coffey said that as a member of the county board, she will "fight for progressive policies that lift everyone up and contribute to the smart growth of our community."

“I’m grateful to all of the Arlington voters who placed their trust in me, and I look forward to getting to work on their behalf to ensure Arlington continues to be the best place to live and raise a family," Coffey said in a statement.

According to the Arlington elections office, the total turnout for Tuesday's general election was about 36 percent of the 175,809 registered voters in the county. The total does not include provisional ballots and outstanding mail ballots that were dropped off Tuesday, the elections office said.
