Arlington Primary Election 2023 Early Voting Set To Begin

Voters will have several nominations to decide on June 20. Plus, Arlington will be using ranked choice voting in the county board primary.

ARLINGTON, VA — Early voting is set to begin on Friday, May 5 for the June 20 Democratic Party primary election in Arlington.

On the Democratic ballot, there are primary elections for county board, commonwealth's attorney and sheriff, plus the 40th District in the state Senate and the 2nd District in the House of Delegates.

Arlington County will be implementing ranked choice voting for the first time in the Democratic primary election for the two county board seats.

Because of mandated redistricting that happened after the 2020 Census, Virginia's legislative district maps have been redrawn. The redistricting placed Sen. Barbara Favola in the new 40th District, which represents about 85 percent of Arlington and no other jurisdictions. The redistricting also created an entirely new House District 2 in Arlington.

How to Vote Early

The first day of in-person early voting in Arlington is May 5. All Arlington voters are eligible to vote at any location. Voters will need to bring an acceptable form of identification.

    All polling places offer wheelchair accessibility, and each has an accessibility-friendly device that sits either on a table or a wheelchair-accessible booth.

    The accessible voting device has an audio ballot that allows blind voters to cast their ballots without assistance. If a voter with limited vision prefers to vote on a touch-screen, the type on the screen can be enlarged and the contrast adjusted as need.

    In-person voting will be held at Courthouse Plaza from May 5 to June 16 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Early voting will also take place at Courthouse Plaza on Saturday, June 10 and Saturday, June 17, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on each day. Extra hours will be provided for voting at Courthouse Plaza on Tuesday, June 13 and Thursday, June 15, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

    In-person early voting will also be held at the Madison Community Center and Walter Reed Community Center on these dates:

    • Tuesday, June 13 and Thursday, June 15 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.
    • Saturday, June 10 and Saturday, June 17 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

    All voters are eligible to vote in the June 20 Democratic primary election using a mail ballot. Voters can request a mail ballot until 5 p.m. on June 9. Voters can request a mail ballot online.

    Ballots must be dropped off by 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 20, or received in the mail by noon on Friday, June 23. Regular mail can take up to 10 days within Arlington.

    Completed mail ballots can be dropped off in person at any of the early voting locations while they are open and at any polling place on Tuesday, June 20 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

    Ballots can also be dropped off at drop box locations from May 8 to June 20 at any of these locations:

    • Courthouse Plaza, 2100 Clarendon Blvd. Located outside the entrance on Clarendon Blvd.
    • Aurora Hills Community Center, 735 18th St S. To the left of the entrance to the community center and library.
    • Arlington Mill Community Center, 909 S Dinwiddie St. On the sidewalk by the entrance on Dinwiddie St.
    • Central Library, 1015 N Quincy St. Located off the main parking lot close to the entrance to the ADA ramp.
    • Langston-Brown Community Center, 2121 N Culpeper St. Located off the main parking lot, on the southwest corner of the building.
    • Madison Community Center, 3829 N Stafford St. Located to the left of the Stafford St entrance by the dog park.
    • Shirlington Library, 4200 Campbell Ave. Located to the left of the main entrance into the library.
    • Walter Reed Community Center, 2909 16th St S. Located along the building to the right of the main entrance to the building.
    • Westover Library, 1644 N McKinley Rd. Located to the left of the library entrance on McKinley St.

    Voter Registration

    For the June 20 primary election, the deadline for voter registration or updating your voter registration address is May 30.

    Voters may check their registration status, polling place and election districts through the Virginia Department of Elections' citizen portal.

    In Arlington County, voters may also register at the Office of Voter Registration, 2100 Clarendon Blvd, Suite 320, Arlington, VA 22201.

    Election Day

    On Election Day, Tuesday, June 20, all Arlington polling places will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voters must vote at their assigned location. Visit the Arlington County elections website to see where to vote and to see the list of Arlington's polling places.
