Assault On Police Charges Filed Against DC Man In Courthouse Area

Arlington County Police charged a Washington, D.C. man after they say he actively resisted arrest Thursday morning in the Courthouse area.

COURTHOUSE, VA — A Washington, D.C. man faces multiple assault on police officer charges in connection with a Thursday morning incident in the Courthouse area, according to Arlington County Police Department's daily crime report.

Shortly before 11:15 a.m., a man approached officers on Clarendon Boulevard at N. Barton Street in the Courthouse area. He told them that another man he knew had taken his cellphone but refused to return it. Police observed the man in question nearby and tried to engage him in order to investigate the incident. The man refused to comply and walked away in the opposite direction. He then turned, shoved one of the officers, and then continued to walk away, according to police.

When additional officers arrived on the scene, they tried to detain the man, but he actively resisted and hit an officer in the head, according to the report. The officer suffered injuries.

Eventually, the police were able to stop the man, but he kicked in the direction of one of the officers and tried to bite another, police say.

ACPD arrested Maurio Johnson, 37, of Washington, D.C., and charged him with two counts of assault and battery on police. He is being held without bond.
