Southbound Side Of GW Parkway Remains Closed Due To Downed Trees
The southbound side of the George Washington Parkway between I-495 and Spout Run Parkway is expected to remain closed due to tree removal.
ARLINGTON/MCLEAN, VA — The southbound side of the George Washington Memorial Parkway between Interstate 495 in McLean and Spout Run Parkway in Arlington remained closed Tuesday afternoon as crews continued to remove trees from the roadway.
The four-mile stretch of highway has been closed since trees fell onto the roadway during the major storm that came through the Washington, D.C. area around 5 p.m. on Saturday. The National Park Service did not say whether the southbound side would reopen for rush hour Wednesday morning.
On Monday, crews removed as many as 325 trees, resulting in 100 dump-truck and 15 chipper-truck loads, and more than 500 tons of wood and debris, from the George Washington Memorial Parkway and Spout Run Parkway, the National Park Service said Tuesday.

The National Park Service operates both the George Washington Memorial Parkway and Spout Run Parkway.
One lane on the northbound side of George Washington Memorial Parkway — in the direction from Arlington to the Beltway — reopened on Tuesday at 1 p.m. The northbound and southbound lanes of Spout Run Parkway in Arlington are expected to reopen later Tuesday, the National Park Service said.

In April, a new traffic pattern was put into place on a portion of the northern section of the George Washington Memorial Parkway between I-495 and Route 123 as part of a $161 million North Parkway Rehabilitation Project.
Contractors also were still working on removing trees that had fallen on houses and in yards across the region on Tuesday. Power had been restored to most homes in Northern Virginia by Tuesday.
