Because of mandated redistricting that happened after the 2020 Census, Virginia's legislative district maps were redrawn. Redistricting placed Favola in the state's new 40th Senate District, which represents about 85 percent of Arlington and no other jurisdictions.
In the Democratic primary in 2019, Favola defeated Nicole Merlene with 12,033 votes to Merlene's 7,411. Favola did not face an opponent in the 2019 general election.
