What's Open, Closed On MLK Jr. Day 2024 In Arlington
Along with holiday closures, Arlington will commemorate the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. with a special tribute event on Sunday, Jan. 14.
ARLINGTON, VA — Residents and businesses in Arlington will honor the life and legacy of civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, Jan. 15.
As a federal holiday, MLK Day could also affect the hours of government offices, libraries, public transportation and other services in Arlington.
Arlington will commemorate the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. with a special tribute event on Sunday, Jan. 14 from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Wakefield High School. The celebration will include a mix of music, dance, and spoken word performances.

This year’s tribute, titled "Stones of Hope," draws inspiration from the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Washington, D.C. The event will showcase snapshots of King’s life, with performances reflecting each of the 14 quotes from the memorial that encapsulate his enduring impact.
Admission to the event is complimentary, with seating available on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m. Residents also can watch a livestream of the "Stones of Hope" tribute to Dr. King at 5 p.m. on Jan. 14.

Volunteer Arlington will host the third annual MLK Day of Service on Monday, Jan. 15, from 8:30 a.m. to noon at Washington-Liberty High School. Participants can engage in various service projects and receive volunteer training. Although the event is free, participants should register by visiting the Volunteer Arlington’s MLK Day of Service website.

Arlington County government offices: Closed Monday, Jan. 15.
Arlington Public Schools: Closed Monday, Jan. 15.
Courts: The Arlington Circuit Court, General District Court, Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court will be closed on Monday, Jan. 15.
Parking: Permit parking is always in effect unless specifically noted on the sign. Meters are not enforced on holidays.
Libraries: Arlington Public Libraries will be closed Monday, Jan. 15.
Trash Pickup & Recycling:
- Recycling/Trash/Organics Curbside Routes: Regular collection on Monday, Jan. 15.
- Special Collections (brush, metal, E-waste): Regular collection on Monday, Jan. 15.
- Mulch Delivery: None on Monday, Jan. 15.
- Customer Contact Center: Closed Monday, Jan. 15.
- Household Hazards/Electronics Drop-Off Facility: Closed Monday, Jan. 15.
- Earth Products Drop-off Yard: Closed Monday, Jan. 15.
Department of Motor Vehicles: All DMV customer service centers are closed Monday, Jan. 15.
Post offices: Closed Monday, Jan. 15.
Metrorail: Over the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, Metro will close a portion of the Blue, Orange, and Silver lines on Friday, Jan. 12 through Monday, Jan. 15. During the four-day closure, buses will replace trains with no rail service between Foggy Bottom-GWU and Arlington Cemetery on the Blue Line; and between Foggy Bottom-GWU and Clarendon on the Orange and Silver lines. The Rosslyn and Court House stations will be closed. Customers traveling through the work zone should expect significant delays and allow at least 30 minutes of additional travel time to account for shuttle buses.
Other Metro lines, including the Red Line, will operate on a Saturday holiday schedule from 5 a.m. to midnight on Monday, Jan. 15. View Metro timetables here.

ART Bus: ART 41, 42, 45, 51, 55 and 87 will operate on Saturday schedules on Monday, Jan. 15. All other ART routes will not operate. The ART Customer Call Center will be closed.
Parks & Recreation Facilities & Programs: All community centers, administrative offices and classes are closed Monday, Jan. 15. League members should check with their leagues on schedules. The Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center is closed Monday, Jan. 15. Parks in Arlington will be open on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Animal Welfare League of Arlington: Closed Monday, Jan. 15. The Arlington County Animal Control team can be reached for emergencies at 703-931-9241.
Sheriff's Office: Administrative Offices closed on Monday, Jan. 15. Fingerprinting for the public and county employees are open Thursdays from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. See detention center visiting hours.
