What's Open, Closed On New Year's Day 2026 In Arlington

ARLINGTON, VA — Arlington residents will head into the new year starting with a holiday, prompting closures and schedule changes affecting government offices, schools, transit and other services.

Here are the openings and closures to know on Thursday, Jan. 1:

Arlington County Government offices and services are operating on modified schedules for the New Year's holiday.

Courts: The Arlington Circuit Court, General District Court, Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court will be closed Thursday, Jan. 1.

Commissioner of the Revenue: Closed at 12 noon on Wednesday, Dec. 24 and closed Thursday, Jan. 1.

Permitting and Inspection Services: Permit Arlington Center will be closed Thursday, Jan. 1.

Parking: Permit parking is always in effect unless specifically noted on the sign. Meters are not enforced on holidays.

Libraries: Arlington Public Libraries will close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 31. All libraries will be closed on Jan. 1.

Trash Pickup & Recycling:

• Recycling/Trash/Organics Curbside Routes – No collection on Thursday, Jan 1. Thursday routes will be serviced on Friday, Jan. 2; Friday routes will be serviced on Saturday, Jan. 3.
• Special Collections (Brush, Metal, E-waste) – No collection on Thursday, Jan. 1. Thursday routes will be serviced on Friday, Jan. 2; Friday routes will be serviced on Saturday, Jan. 3.
• Household Hazardous Materials/Electronics Collection Recycling Center – Closed
• Earth Products Recycling Yard – Closed

Department of Motor Vehicles: DMV Select at Bozman Government Center at Window 218: Closed. Visit DMV’s Online Services to access many available transactions.

Metro: Metro will have weekday service from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 31 and weekend late night service from 6 a.m. to midnight. Fares will be free from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Dec. 31.

Parks & Recreation Facilities & Programs:

• Wednesday, Dec. 31 - All community centers including Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center will close at 5 p.m.
• Thursday, Jan. 1 - All community centers including Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center will be closed.

Animal Welfare League of Arlington: Closed Wednesday, Dec. 1 and Thursday, Jan. 1.

Sheriff's Office: Detention Center Visiting Hours. Please note, no fingerprinting services will occur at the ACSO since courts are closed.

ABC Stores: Virginia ABC stores will close at 8 p.m. on Dec. 31 and be open from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Jan. 1.

Post offices: Closed on Jan. 1.
