What's Open, Closed For Thanksgiving 2025 In Arlington

The Thanksgiving holiday will prompt closures around Arlington, and some will continue into Friday.

ARLINGTON, VA — Thanksgiving Day falls on Thursday, Nov. 27 this year, bringing a holiday break for students and employees.

Government offices, schools and some businesses will close for the holiday observance. Many government offices and services will also be closed on Friday, Nov. 28 for Black Friday, making it a four-day weekend.

If you were hoping to take part in the 2025 Arlington Turkey Trot 20th Anniversary 5K on Thursday, you're out of luck. The race is sold out.

But, you can still cheer on participants or donate to the Arlington Turkey Trot Fund, which benefits a range of organizations, including Arlington Thrive, Animal Welfare League of Arlington, Bridges to Independence, Center for Youth and Family Advocacy, Doorways, L’Arche Greater Washington DC, PathForward, Offender Aid and Restoration (OAR), Rock Recovery, and Young Life Capernaum.

Here are all the openings and closings to know around Arlington for Thanksgiving on Nov. 27 and Black Friday on Nov. 28.

Arlington County government offices: Closed Thursday, Nov. 27 and Friday, Nov. 28.

Arlington Public Schools: Closed Thursday, Nov. 27 and Friday, Nov. 28.

Courts: The Arlington Circuit Court, General District Court, Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 27 and Friday, Nov. 28.

Permitting and Inspection Services: Permit Arlington Center is closed on Thursday, Nov. 27 and Friday, Nov. 28.. Permit Arlington is available for customer use and application submissions

Parking: Permit parking is always in effect unless specifically noted on the sign. Meters are not enforced on holidays.

Libraries: Arlington Public Libraries will be closed on Wednesday, at 5 p.m., and all-day Thursday, Nov. 27. and Friday, Nov. 28.

Trash Pickup & Recycling:

  • Recycling/Trash/Organics Curbside Routes – No collection Thursday. Thursday routes run on Friday, Nov. 28; Friday routes run on Saturday, Nov. 29.
  • Leaf Collection – No first passes will be done on Thursday, Nov. 27. Vacuum trucks will resume leaf collection on Friday, Nov. 28.
  • Special Collections (Brush, Metal, E-waste) –No collection Thursday. Thursday routes run on Friday, Nov. 28; Friday routes run on Saturday, Nov. 29.
  • Household Hazardous Materials/Electronics Collection Recycling Center - Closed until Monday, Dec. 1
  • Earth Products Yard - Closed until Monday, Dec. 1

Department of Motor Vehicles: All DMV customer service centers are closed Thursday, Nov. 27.

Post offices: Closed Thursday, Nov. 27.

Metrorail: On Thursday, Nov. 27., Metro will open at 7 a.m- 1 a.m. See more weekend Metro news.

Parks & Recreation Facilities & Programs:

Wed., Nov. 26

  • All community centers will close at 5 p.m.


Thu., Nov. 27

  • All community centers are closed.
  • Administrative offices closed.


Fri., Nov. 28

  • All community centers are closed, except for Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center.
  • Administrative offices closed.
  • Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center is open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Animal Welfare League of Arlington: Closing early on Wednesday at 5 p.m. and will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 27. p.m. The Arlington County Animal Control team can be reached for emergencies at 703-931-9241.

Sheriff's Office: Administrative Offices closed on Thursday, Nov. 27.. Fingerprinting for the public and county employees are open Thursdays from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. See detention center visiting hours.
