Sign Up for Crew, Explore the Other 1 Percent, King Street Art Festival and Taste of Falls Church

A look at what's happening in Alexandria and around town this weekend.

The weather this weekend is supposed to be fabulous, giving Alexandrians a host of outdoor options for fun. There are a number of big family-friendly events in Alexandria and Falls Church celebrating the arts and cuisine along with the Freedom Walk, a time to reflect on America's veterans. Here are a few suggestions to make the most out of your weekend:

Stroke! Registration for this year’s fall crew program will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at the boathouse, which is located on the Potomac River at 1 Madison St. in Alexandria. Fall crew begins Sept. 9 and will be held from 4:15 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.  The program runs for five weeks and concludes on Oct. 11. Crew is open to all students in the 7th-12th grades from public and private schools in Alexandria and the Washington, DC metro area.  

One Percent art exhibit opening reception Friday from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Del Ray Artisans, 2704 Mount Vernon Ave. The art exhibit shows works inspired by asking artists to share the 1 percent in their world as inspired by F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and its look at the wealthy 1 percent. The exhibit runs through September.

Revel in the arts at the 11th annual King Street Art Festival Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event turns King Street from Washington Street to the waterfront into an outdoor art gallery with original art work from more than 200 artists.

It’s the Taste of Falls Church at the Fall Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Community Center, 223 Little Falls St. Sample cuisine Saturday from city restaurants for $3 per taste or 10 tastes for $25. Participating restaurants include Argia’s, Dogwood Tavern, Mad Fox Brewing Company, Pizzeria Orso, Sweet Rice and Zinga Frozen Yogurt, but there are many more.

Operation Homefront DC Metro will host Freedom Walk 2013 with a walk through Arlington Cemetery and wreath laying ceremonies at the Pentagon Memorial and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The walk is from 8 a.m. to noon at Arlington National Cemetery, 1 Memorial Dr.
