Academic Achievement Party for Students From Low-Income Families Held at Old Town Hall

The 32 students recognized at the event got all As and Bs on their report cards.

Fairfax City's Old Town Hall was the site of a celebration Thursday night when FACETS, a nonprofit that assists parents, their children, and individuals who suffer the effects of poverty in Fairfax County, hosted an Academic Achievement Party for 32 youth served by its Education and Community Development Program (ECD).

The 32 children recognized at the event earned all A’s and B’s on their report cards. Also recognized during the event is the fact that 12 out of the 13 graduating high school students will be moving on to higher forms of education.

The event also featured a performance by Chris Saunders, one of the graduating high school students.

FACETS’ Education and Community Development Program operates year-round in three low-income, subsidized communities "offering a continuum of supportive services to break the cycle of poverty."

According to FACETS, the residents of these affordable housing communities have limited financial resources, with the average income for a family of four only around $18,000.

Within these communities, staff and volunteers offer an array of educational, preventative and enrichment programs to help youth, including mentoring and tutoring, and a variety of classes such as literacy, art, computer, and substance abuse and dating violence prevention.

"The Academic Achievement Party is designed to inspire young people to stay focused on academics as a means to break the cycle of poverty," said Shawn Flaherty, a FACETS representative.
