Driver Returns To Scene Of Fatal Crash Involving Pedestrian: Police

As police investigated a fatal crash involving a pedestrian, the driver of the striking vehicle returned to the scene, authorities say.

FAIR OAKS, VA — The driver of a vehicle that struck and killed a man Tuesday morning on the Fairfax County Parkway returned to the scene of crash, while police were conducting their investigation, according to authorities.

Around 9:45 a.m., a Fair Oaks-area resident reported seeing what appeared to be a deceased person in the grassy median of the parkway about a half-mile north of the Rugby Road intersection, according to Capt. Jesse Katzman of FCPD's public information office.

Units from Fairfax County Fire and Rescue were first on the scene and confirmed that there was a deceased man in the median, Katzman told reporters during a news conference on Tuesday morning.

"During the investigation, the driver of the striking vehicle returned to the scene," according to the report. "The circumstances surrounding the crash are still being investigated. Preliminarily, alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash. Detectives continue to investigate whether speed was a factor."

On Wednesday, police described the deceased pedestrian as a 50-year-old man of an undetermined address. The release of the man's identity was pending notification of the victim's family. As of Friday morning, police had not released the name of the driver.
