Basketball Camp Next Week, Citizens Fire Academy Sign-Ups Underway, Yard Sales and More

Welcome to Today in Fairfax, giving you the day's local news and events at a glance.

The City of Fairfax Fire Department is currently registering local citizens for its next Citizen's Fire Academy (FCCFA). The program is open to persons 18 or older who either live or work in the City of Fairfax. The 12-week program includes approximately 28 hours of instruction. Sessions are one evening per week for approximately 2.5 hours, and are held at the Public Safety Training Center located at 9650 Colonial Avenue. Class size will be limited to 16 students. The program is designed for people who have a genuine desire to learn about the daily life of firefighters, who want to increase fire and life safety awareness, and who wish to increase their awareness of the services provided by the City of Fairfax Fire Department. Graduates will receive a certificate of completion from the City of Fairfax Fire Department. Sign your child up now for Best Youth Hoops summer basketball camp next week, Aug. 12-16, at Providence Presbyterian Church, 9019 Little River Turnpike in Fairfax. Camp is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Boys and girls ages 6 to 14 are welcome and campers will be grouped according to age and skill. For more information including how to register, see their announcement on Patch here.

Bob McDonnell, Herring - the Democratic candidate for attorney general - said his ethics reform would include a commission to review and improve Virginia ethics laws.
