Brother's Brother Foundation Opens, A Mini-Spa for National Night Out, and More

On Saturday, July 27th, Brother’s Brother Foundation (BBF) celebrated the grand opening of its new medical supply warehouse at 2730 Prosperity Ave. in Fairfax. Under the auspices of BBF, three former staff members of the recently-closed CrossLink International in Falls Church have continued its mission of moving donated medical supplies to needy global areas.  Founded in 1993 by Dr. Barry Byer, CrossLink was an ecumenical humanitarian nonprofit organization which supplied medicine, medical equipment and supplies to approximately 350 mission teams and hospitals worldwide and in the U.S. The 55-year-old Brother’s Brother Foundation has provided more than $3.5 billion of medical supplies, textbooks, food, seeds, disaster relief, and other humanitarian supplies to people in 140 countries. BBF Northern Virginia is now connecting with local hospital systems, clinics, long-term care facilities and medical manufacturers to offer their help in medical supply recovery programs.  BBF can facilitate the redistribution of “no longer needed” medical supplies and equipment to serve local and global humanitarian needs while enhancing local facility sustainability efforts. For more information, visit www.brothersbrother.org or call 703-992-9210.

Don’t forget – tonight is National Night Out! Many members of the City Council, City of Fairfax Police Department, Mayor Scott Silverthorne, and yes, even McGruff the crime-fighting dog, will be out and about in Fairfax City tonight enjoying each others’ company as well as some good food and beverages. And, while you’re out and about for National Night Out tonight, the staff of Comfort and Joy Wellness Spa at the Turnpike Shopping Center invite members of the public to stop by and check out how nice the shopping center is looking with all the newer stores. Between 6-9 p.m., C&J’s staff will provide mini-spa treatments, refreshments and fun – including, a representative from Dove Chocolate Discoveries will be on hand offering fresh, cocoa-infused beverages and chocolate confections that are sure to please. C&J Wellness Spa is located at 9514 Main St.

Lands and Waters, a local environmental nonprofit, is partnering with Transition Fairfax and Friends of Accotink Creek to lead an invasive plant removal workshop/workday at Kutner Park this Sunday, Aug. 11, from 9 a.m. to noon. Participants will learn how to recognize and remove invasive plants safely and responsibly, while participating in the restoration of a remnant historic wetland forest area. Lands and Waters has been leading educational and restoration activities at Kutner Park with Lanier Middle School students over the past few months. They have partnered with community groups, local government and nonprofit entities, corporations, and the City of Fairfax Parks and Recreation Department on projects at Kutner Park including invasive removals, biodiversity surveys, and the creation of a vernal pool, as part of a National Fish and Wildlife Foundation grant. Looking for a job in the health field? Northern Virginia Family Services (NVFS) will host a job fair this Saturday, Aug. 10, 9 a.m. to noon, at its administrative office in Oakton to fill five full-time “Health Navigator” positions. Candidates with a background or interest in health and/or social services are encouraged to attend. The core functions of “health navigators” are to provide outreach, education, and enrollment assistance to individuals and small businesses eligible to enroll in the Marketplace – which opens Oct. 1 - under President Obama’s Affordable Care Act.
