Enjoy a Taste of the Vine, Apply Now for City Boards and Commissions, and More

The City of Fairfax is currently seeking new volunteers for open positions on a number of boards and commissions. “From arts to aging, from community appearance to parks and recreation, from history to elections, there’s bound to be a board or commission of interest,” City staff said in a community newsletter recently. Interested citizens who live or work in the city may apply to join a commission or board when a vacancy arises. For the majority of city boards and commissions, the City Council and mayor interview applicants and appoint individuals, though there are exceptions. Applicants must be registered voters. A list of City and regional boards and commissions is available on the City’s website or from the City Clerk’s Office in City Hall. Support a piece of history while enjoying delicious wine at the same time. Coming up next month is the Taste of the Vine fundraising event on Sept. 27. Enjoy an evening of fine food and wine from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Civil War Interpretive Center at Historic Blenheim, 3610 Old Lee Highway in Fairfax City. The proceeds will benefit the restoration of Blenheim. Tickets are $50 per person and can be purchased at the Fairfax Museum and Visitor Center, 10209 Main St. in Fairfax City. Your ticket includes hors d’oeuvres, wine tasting, live music, the silent auction and more. The event is sponsored by Historic Fairfax City, Inc. For information, call 703-591-5305.

Fairfax County will host a weekly series on diabetes management on Wednesdays from Sept. 4 to Oct. 9 at Bruen Chapel United Methodist Church, 3035 Cedar Lane in Fairfax. Topics will include managing pain and emotions, using medication properly, communicating with health care providers, adopting exercise and nutrition goals, and making informed medical decisions. The Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth will hold a workshop on Thursday, Sept. 5 at the Fairfax County Government Center in Fairfax on how to make lessons more interesting and fun to both the students and the teacher using various techniques and interesting tools.
