Get an Up-Close Look at the City of Fairfax Police Department

Applications are currently being accepted for the next session of the Citizens Police Academy.

The City of Fairfax Police Department is currently accepting applications for locals interested in getting an up-close look at what makes Fairfax City's local police department tick, through the Citizens Police Academy.

Applications are due no later than Aug. 15, and the program takes place from Sept. 5 through Nov. 14, from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

According to the department, "The Citizens Police Academy offers a unique opportunity for interested citizens to learn about the role of the Police Department and its many functions, services and capabilities."

Initiated in 2007 by Col. Richard Rappoport, Fairfax City's current Chief of Police, the objective of the Academy "is not to train individuals to be 'police officers' but to produce informed citizens," the department said in a news release.

"Citizens and police officers meet face-to-face in a neutral, friendly setting, so each group develops an understanding of the other," the release continued.

Officers said, by helping citizens learn about the police department's operations and personnel, the department hopes to "reduce fears and misconceptions that may exist, and which result in conflicts caused simply by lack of understanding."

The department said, past Citizens Academy graduates have said that attendance in the program has been "a worthwhile investment of their time," and "a beneficial learning experience."

In order to take part in the program, one must:

  • Be a City resident, or work in the City of Fairfax
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be a United States citizen
  • Pass a background check

Applications can be downloaded off the Police Department's website.
