Nutley Street Reopens After Road Cleared Of Debris From Truck Crash

Northbound Nutley Street before I-66 was closed for several hours Tuesday due to an overturned truck dumping debris onto the road.

FAIRFAX, VA — Nutley Street in Fairfax reopened to traffic in both directions, according to a 3:09 p.m. social media post from the Fairfax County Police Department.

Debris from an overturned truck on Nutley Street in Fairfax between Route 29 and the I-66 ramps closed the northbound lanes of Nutley Street and backed up traffic in the southbound lanes around 11:19 a.m. on Tuesday, according to a spokesman with the Fairfax County Police Department.

Personnel from the Fairfax County's police and fire departments, as well as incident responders from the Virginia Department of Transportation, oversaw the work to cleanup after the crash and right the overturned truck.

FCPD closed access to northbound Nutley Street at the Route 29 to Saintsbury Drive. At first, southbound traffic was being funneled to a single lane at Saintsbury Drive, but by 2 p.m. a second lane had opened. All roads reopened around an hour later.

The truck was carrying metal recyclables, which were dumped onto the road, according to the FCPD spokesman.

Although the county's hazardous materials truck responded to the scene, there were no hazardous materials present nor was there any immediate danger to the public, the spokesman said. Fire personnel did spread a powdery substance over the roadway, in order to cleanup the truck's diesel fuel.

There was no immediate information available about what caused the truck to overturn, although an FCPD social media post said the driver was uninjured.
