📰 News we're reading

1. Plans for 15 townhomes in Falls Church head to Planning Commission (arlnow.com) — Fifteen new townhomes are proposed for Park Avenue in the City of Falls Church, with the Planning Commission set to review the subdivision request soon. A recent state law shift means city staff, not the commission, will ultimately decide the site plan, as Falls Church continues adding townhouses and expanding its housing stock near Park and Lee streets.

2. Letty Hardi will remain the mayor of Falls Church after split 4-3 Council vote (arlnow.com) — Falls Church residents will see familiar leadership continue, as Letty Hardi narrowly secured another two-year term as mayor in a 4–3 council vote, with Laura Downs unanimously chosen as vice mayor. Council members emphasized collaboration despite differing views, while noting regional economic concerns and the city’s need to work closely with its Northern Virginia neighbors.

3. Compass Coffee files for bankruptcy (wusa9.com) — A Compass Coffee shop on Lee Highway in Falls Church is slated to close as the regional chain files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and moves to shed 10 store leases. The company, which operates 25 locations and employs over 160 workers, says it spends about $115,000 weekly on wages while it restructures.

4. Park authority rolls back boulders blocking field at West Falls Church park (ffxnow.com) — Residents who rely on Roundtree Park’s open field in West Falls Church can keep playing: Fairfax County Park Authority is removing boulders that briefly blocked the space. Officials say the rocks were meant to discourage unpermitted mowing, but community pushback and surprise from park leaders prompted a quick reversal, keeping the informal soccer and recreation area open while maintenance levels remain limited.
