Council: Herndon Residents Encouraged to Give Back Between Sept. 15-29
Mayor Lisa Merkel and the Town Councilmembers have declared Sept. 15-29 to be a 'Day to Serve' period in which residents are encouraged to give back in their communities.

Today - Sunday, Sept. 15 - kicks off a two-week period in which the Herndon Town Council is encouraging residents to give back in their communities.
This past Tuesday, Sept. 10, Mayor Lisa Merkel and the Town Councilmembers declared Sept. 15-29 to be the 2013 "Day to Serve" time, as a time when Herndon residents can join thousands of others from around the region to get involved in service activities to feed the hungry and help make our communities better places for everyone to live in.
Laurie Snow Turner, a resident who joined with many others to coordinate local efforts for the Day to Serve period, said at the council meeting, "We want to thank the mayor for being part of this effort, which extends from the nation's capital to the farthest corners of Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland. We commend Mayor Merkel and the Town Council for recognizing the importance and value of service."
"We are also grateful for the number of community groups - both large and small - that are getting involved and rallying around this call to service," Turner continued.
The Proclamation made by the Mayor and Town Council states that Day to Serve is "an opportunity for people to put aside their differences to feed the hungry and heal the planet." It recognizes that "this annual event is unique, and transcends all political and religious differences, uniting people of all faiths, races, cultures and backgrounds."
During the meeting, Mayor Merkel said, "Herndon's citizens, businesses, schools and community groups share a proud heritage of community service. On behalf of the Town Council, it is our pleasure to recognize the 'Day to Serve' as a way for all of us to focus on how we can enrich our community through service initiatives and programs."
