Herndon Elementary Students Chalk Up Campus in the Name of Peace

Herndon Elementary students covered school grounds with chalk drawings Friday, in the name of peace.

Herndon Elementary students of all ages - including even the preschoolers from the HeadStart program - spent a day pondering the meaning of peace and how to bring more of it into their lives Friday.

How did they do it? By chalking up the place.

Inspired by the group "Chalk 4 Peace," the school held their own chalking event Friday, allowing every student time to create their own work of chalk art on the school grounds that depicted what peace means to them.

"The students have spent an art class period talking about what peace means to them and how they can use images to show peace," said Margaret McDonald, an art teacher who helped organize the event.

By the end of the school day Friday, the sidewalks in front of the school as well as many of the outdoor stairs and the whole blacktop were covered with bright, colorful chalk images evoking the idea of peace.

See the short video and photos above to view some of the students' works of art.
