HERNDON, VA -- Dining out in Herndon is about to get a bit more expensive.

The Town of Herndon has passed an ordinance raising the meal tax from 2.5 percent to 3.75 percent.

The ordinancy states that it "is hereby imposed and levied on each person purchasing a meal or meals from any food establishment, a tax at the rate of three and three-quarters on the amount such person paid for the meal or meals, whether prepared in such food establishment or not, and whether consumed on the premises or not."

The ordinance was enacted on April 23, and will be effective on July 1 for meals purchased on and after that date.
