SPRINGFIELD, VA — Local nonprofit America's Adopt a Soldier is hosting its 12th Annual Christmas Day Care Packing event on Sunday in Springfield.

Volunteers will be packing care packages and care letters to send to deployed military personnel and veterans in veterans homes and hospitals.

The event will take place from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 25 at American Legion Post 176 at 6520 Amherst Ave. in Springfield.

There are no age restrictions on volunteers who participate in the event. All volunteers will be served lunch.

Organizers will be providing items to place in the care packing boxes. Residents can also bring an item to donate for the care packages. Visit the event website to see what items the organizers recommend for donations.

Based in Northern Virginia, America's Adopt a Soldier was founded in 2009 by Mary Keeser, a retired Army officer, to serve and respond to the needs of soldiers, veterans and their families.
