Fatal Hit + Run: Police Continue to Look for Clues in I-495 Crash

Alexandria-area man, 41, was killed during a 23-car pile-up on icy roads Dec. 17 on I-495.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA -- The Virginia State Police continues to pursue leads in the Dec. 17, 2016, fatal hit-and-run of an Alexandria-area man and is now partnering with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to help garner the public’s help.

Thursday night, VDOT message boards on Interstate 495 near the 50-mile marker in Fairfax County began flashing a message asking motorists with any information related to the fatal crash to call the Virginia State Police by dialing #77 on a cell phone. The message boards will continue to flash the message through Tuesday (Jan. 31).

“We know that several of the motorists involved in the multi-vehicle crash that Saturday morning were on their way to work,” said Capt. R. Greg Kincaid, Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Fairfax Field Office commander. “We’re hopeful that these message boards may reach some of those same drivers who encountered the crash and who may be able to provide us with the key evidence we need to resolve this fatal pedestrian crash on I-495.”

Through extensive investigation and based on multiple witness accounts, Virginia State Police have determined that the deceased male subject was struck during the course of the multi-vehicle crashes in the northbound lanes of I-495 around the 50 mile marker on the morning of Dec. 17.

Liem T. Nguyen, 41, of the Alexandria area was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado north on I-495 when it spun out of control on the icy roadway, struck the Jersey wall and spun back into the travel lanes, police said. He exited his vehicle and spoke briefly to another driver just moments before oncoming traffic began sliding out of control and crashing. Nguyen was struck by other vehicles in the course of that multi-vehicle crash. He died at the scene, police said.
