Paving And Restriping Changes Proposed In Kingstowne Area

UPDATE: The Lee District meeting has been moved to April 7 at 7 p.m.

FRANCONIA, VA — A number of road configuration changes in the Franconia, Kingstowne and Springfield areas are proposed as part of the 2021 Paving and Restriping Program by the Virginia Department of Transportation.

VDOT repaves hundreds of roads in Fairfax County each year. This program is done in collaboration with the Fairfax County Department of Transportation to implement parts of the county's comprehensive plan to improve traffic safety for different road users. Improvements added during repaving can include bike lanes, parking lanes, crosswalks and more. Paving work is expected to begin in April and finish in November.

VDOT and the Fairfax County Department of Transportation will hold a virtual meeting on the proposed paving and restriping changes for the Lee District on April 7 at 7 p.m. Residents can also provide online comments through April 22.

Here are the proposed changes in the Lee District:

• Fleet Drive from Yadkin Court to Beulah Street, Franconia: The proposal calls for the road to be restriped with two travel lanes, bike lanes and left turn lanes/center turn lane. On-street parking will be maintained. The road currently has a mix of one or two lanes in each direction and right-turn and center turn lanes on portions.
• King Centre Drive between Kingstowne Village Parkway and South Van Dorn Street, Kingstowne: The proposal calls for underutilized outside travel lanes to be converted to buffered bike lanes. Transportation officials do not expect negative impacts on traffic due to low traffic volumes on this road even before the pandemic. The road has two lanes in each direction for much of the stretch, and turn lanes are located on some portions.
• Seatrend Way from Franconia Road to the end of the road, Springfield: The proposal calls for the addition of a center lane, bike lanes, and parking lanes to calm traffic speed and enhance bicycle and pedestrian safety. On-street parking will be maintained on both sides of the road.
• Sir Viceroy Drive from King Centre Drive to Kingstowne Boulevard, Kingstowne: The proposal calls for restriping the road with two travel lanes, a center turn lane, and bike lanes. Transportation officials do not expect negative impacts on traffic due to low traffic volumes on this road even before the pandemic. The road largely has two travel lanes in each directions with turn lanes where the road meets King Centre Drive and Kingstowne Boulevard.

No other roads will be added to the preliminary 2021 paving schedule. Exact start dates will be advertised 10 days before work starts. Work on neighborhood roads will typically happen between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., while overnight road work could occur for interstates and some primary routes.
