Democrat Runs For Gainesville District Supervisor Nomination

A Democrat has entered the race for Gainesville District supervisor ahead of a Democratic nominating caucus.

GAINESVILLE, VA — After Prince William County Democrats announced a caucus to choose its candidate for Gainesville District supervisor, a candidate has entered the race.

Jewan "Jack" Tiwari announced he will seek the Democratic nomination for Gainesville District supervisor on the Prince William Board of County Supervisors. A resident who has lived in Gainesville and Manassas for over 20 years, Tiwari has worked as a franchise broker and a local realtor. He is also a past president of the America Nepal Society, was appointed to the Virginia Asian Advisory Board by Gov. Ralph Northam, and founded the National Dog Festival—Kukur Tihar USA. He previously ran for Virginia House of Delegates in 2015.

"I am running to be a strong, local voice for the people of Gainesville on the Board of Supervisors," said Tiwari in a statement. "I have seen our community grow and thrive, and I believe we need a leader who is committed to a common-sense approach to our challenges."

According to Tiwari, his three campaign priorities are responsible growth, supporting resources for schools and teachers, and community-first leaderships on local issues. He plans to advocate for more open spaces, community gardens, and campsites as well as explore an Orange Line extension to the Manassas-Gainesville-Haymarket area.

Data centers and other new development are a major issue for residents in western Prince William County.

"I will ensure new development protects our quality of life and existing infrastructure," said Tiwari in a campaign message. "My commitment to you is that I will not vote for additional data centers in our neighborhoods, nor will I vote to raise taxes during my initial term. I believe in spending our tax dollars wisely."

Republican Gainesville District Supervisor Bob Weir, 62, died from metastatic colon cancer on July 20. The vacancy prompted the Prince William County Office of Elections to announce a special election on Nov. 4, the same date as the general election. Early voting for the November election will open on Sept. 19.

The Prince William County Democratic Committee will hold its unassembled caucus to elect its nominee for the Gainesville District supervisor from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Aug. 10.

On Monday, Prince William County Republicans are expected to decide on a method of nomination for Gainesville District supervisor. Inside Nova reported that Republicans Brian Landrum and Patrick Harders are seeking the nomination.
