How To Recycle Christmas Trees Around Manassas After Holidays

MANASSAS, VA — In Manassas and Prince William County, there are several ways to get rid of your live Christmas tree once the holidays are over.

The National Fire Protection Association recommends taking out Christmas trees when they are dry due to the fire hazard. The organization said trees will dry out over time and be more likely to catch fire quickly than a well-watered tree. Annual home fires caused by Christmas trees averaged 155 between 2018 and 2022, causing an average four resident deaths, seven residents injuries and $15 million in direct property damage.

City of Manassas trash collection service will accept live Christmas trees curbside on yard waste Mondays in January. Lights, tinsel, ornaments and stands should be removed, and trees should not be in plastic bags. Residents should put trees out by 6 p.m. on Mondays in January to ensure collection.

In the City of Manassas Park, live Christmas trees may be set out with regular trash pickup with all decorations removed.

Prince William County residents with curbside yard waste collection can typically put out Christmas trees for collection during the first two weeks of January. Residents may also take trees to the Prince William County Landfill at 14811 Dumfries Road in Manassas or Compost Facility at 13000 Hansen Farm Road in Manassas or Compost Facility at 13000 Hansen Farm Road in Manassas during open hours.

The Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative will also accept live Christmas trees and greens at its Gainesville Technical Center at 5399 Wellington Branch Road in Gainesville from Dec. 26 through Jan. 12. Residents should leave greens in the area of the parking lot marked by orange safety cones. Decorations, ornament hooks, wires, and light strings must be removed.

Residents who receive curbside recycling service may also contact their recycling service provider, homeowners association or town office for more information on Christmas tree collections.
