Tractor Trailer Wreck, Fire Closes Interstate 66, Driver Charged

A tractor trailer full of tomatoes crashed against a guard rail and caught fire, according to Virginia State Police.

Haymarket, VA — A tractor trailer full of tomatoes caught fire Monday morning after hitting the guard rail on Interstate 66 in Prince William County, according to Virginia State Police.

The wreck at 8:06 a.m. closed the interstate in both directions and the Route 15 overpass. Westbound travel resumed roughly an hour later, but eastbound lanes were still closed for the cleanup, as of 10:30 a.m.

The tractor-trailer was reportedly traveling east on the interstate when it ran off the left side of the road and struck the guardrail. The vehicle ran against the guardrail for a short distance before it stopped and caught fire, according to Virginia State Police.

The driver, Jose E. Martinez, 50, of Brownsville, Texas, was charged with reckless driving. Fatigue was a factor in the crash, according to state police. He suffered minor injuries.
