Jennie Dean Elementary Groundbreaking Held In Manassas
City and school officials broke ground on the building to replace the current Jennie Dean Elementary School in Manassas.

MANASSAS, VA — A groundbreaking was held for construction of a new Jennie Dean Elementary School in Manassas ahead of construction starting in 2025.
The Manassas City School Board opted to build a new school building as the option for the aging 60-year-old elementary school. The new school will serve PreK to fourth grade.
The groundbreaking event featured remarks from Manassas City School Board Chair Suzanne Seaberg, Mayor Michelle Davis-Younger, Superintendent Kevin Newman, state Sen. Danica Roem, Del. Michelle Lopes Maldonado, Principal Brian Coleman and Dr. Thurma Goldman, president of the Jennie Dean Education Foundation.

Jennie Dean Elementary is named for Jennie Serepta Dean, who was born enslaved in Sudley Springs, Virginia and had a dedicated career to educating African American children. According to MCPS, Dean started Manassas Industrial School for Colored Youth in 1893, enrolling 500 students. She died in 1913. The city honors her legacy with the Jennie Dean Memorial grounds on the Manassas Industrial School site near Wellington Road.
