MANASSAS, VA — The Virginia Railway Express owners are moving forward with an agreement to buy the Manassas Line of the commuter train service.

As first reported by the Virginia Mercury, the agreement provides VRE with more power over five stations in the corridor and a rail yard in Alexandria to improve train storage capabilities. The funding agreement is with the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority, which announced a plan in September 2024 to buy the Manassas Line from Norfolk Southern Corporation. The greater goal is to improve weekday service as well as add Saturday service. VRE has indicated it was working toward adding Saturday service but has not announced a startup date.
