Manassas Teacher Honored As Washington Post Teacher Of The Year Finalist

MANASSAS, VA — A Manassas teacher was recognized as the top in the school division and one of the region's top teachers by the Washington Post.

The Washington Post has given the awards for more than 40 years to honor leaders "dedicated to improving educational outcomes of students in the Washington metropolitan area." Weems Elementary School first grade teacher Dhanel Brown, a 2024 Teacher of the Year finalist, was honored for her award at Tuesday's Manassas School Board meeting. She received a trophy, flowers, and a banner that will hang outside the school over a year.

Brown, who was inspired by her fifth grade teacher to pursue teaching, said in a statement it was an honor to be recognized.

"I structure my teaching methods to meet the diverse needs and learning styles of all my students," said Brown. "My teaching philosophy helps to foster critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and promote a growth mindset in my students."

According to Manassas City Public Schools, Brown has been an elementary school teacher for nine years, eight of which were at Weems Elementary School. Along with teaching different grades throughout the years, she has been the lead mentor for new teachers. she has also contributed to initiatives like the Strategic Planning Committee and Equity Task Force along with taking leadership roles at the school.

"Ms. Brown exemplifies the best in teaching," Weems Elementary Principal Michele Hupman said. "She empowers her students with the knowledge and confidence they need to be successful in school, and also supports our newest colleagues in building their instructional competency."

Brown was one of 17 teacher finalists honored along with the top winner. The Teacher of the Year was fourth grade teacher Laura Senturia of Colin Powell Elementary School in Fairfax County.

The Principal of the Year award was given to Principal Zadia Gadsden of Takoma Park Elementary in Montgomery County, Maryland. Another 16 principals were Principal of the Year finalists.
