MANASSAS, VA — A road design public hearing is coming up, focusing on improvements on a heavily traveled section of Route 28 in the Yorkshire and Manassas Park areas.

The Virginia Department of Transportation is planning Route 28 intersection upgrades as a result of the Centreville Road (Route 28) STARS Study. The improvements are targeted between Manassas Drive (Route 213) in Manassas Park and Spruce Street in the Yorkshire neighborhood of Prince William County.

VDOT noted the public hearing will not address the cancelled Route 28 Bypass project or other Route 28 improvements outside of the project limits.

Proposed improvements include converting the Route 28 intersections with Maplewood Drive and Browns Lane to restricted crossing u-turns, constructing a median u-turn between Birch Street and Spruce Street, and extending the southbound Route 28 left-turn/u-turn lane at Blooms Quarry Lane. VDOT also wants to add concrete medians between Spruce Street and Browns Lane and reconstruct medians between Browns Lane and Manassas Drive. Sidewalks would be added or reconstructed with grass buffers along southbound Route 28 between Spruce Street and Old Centreville Road, and northbound Route 28 between Blooms Quarry Lane and Browns Lane. Constructing and upgrading curb ramps, striping new crosswalks and improving drainage and stormwater management would round out the project.

According to VDOT, the estimated project timeline is spring 2026 for awarding a design-build contract and spring 2028 for starting construction.
