Route 28 Study Underway For 2-Mile Stretch In Prince William County
A two-mile stretch of Route 28 is being studied for multimodal transportation improvements.

PRINCE WILLIAM, VA — While larger efforts are underway to fix Route 28 congestion, Prince William County is studying ways to improve multimodal transportation on a section of the roadway.
The county government is using an $80,000 grant from the Metropolitan Washington Council of Government’s Transportation Planning Board to study a two-mile section of Route 28 in the Yorkshire area. This section of Route 28 between the Fairfax County and City of Manassas borders is identified as a multimodal center in the Board of County Supervisors' comprehensive plan update. This section is also a major commuter route, with an estimated 15,000 vehicles passing through each day.
"The focus of the study is to look at transit, bicycle and pedestrian improvements. That could include transit amenities, such as bus pull-offs and/or shelters, or recommendations for closing gaps in the bicycle and pedestrian network," said Bryce Barrett, project lead with the Prince William County Department of Transportation, in a news release. "Recommendations from this study will help develop future plans and strategies to ensure that there is adequate infrastructure to give residents a choice in how they want travel within the corridor."

There are two major projects happening to improve Route 28, which connects major routes like Route 7, Route 29, Route 234, Interstate 66, Route 50, Dulles International Airport and Route 267. In Fairfax County, a 2.3-mile section of Route 28 is being widened from four lanes to six lanes from the bridge over Bull Run to the Route 29 interchange in Centreville. In Prince William County, the Board of County Supervisors voted to advance a new design option in the Route 28 bypass project that would eliminate right-of-way impacts in Fairfax County but have additional right-of-way impacts in Prince William County.
