Storms With Heavy Rains, Damaging Winds Eyed In NoVA Forecast

Forecasters haven't ruled out damaging winds, an isolated tornado and heavy downpours with approaching rain in Northern Virginia.

VIRGINIA — As rain approaches to drench Northern Virginia and the rest of the DC region, severe weather impacts like damaging winds, thunderstorms with heavy rain and an isolated tornado can't be ruled out.

The region is under a hazardous weather outlook by the National Weather Service. Forecasters say damaging and winds and isolated tornado could be possible Thursday afternoon into the evening. Heavy rainfall from thunderstorms could cause isolated flooding.

As a result of the storm, there is a coastal flood watch with moderate coastal flooding possible during the Friday morning high tide. This includes shorelines in the District of Columbia, Arlington and the City of Alexandria.

A wind advisory also applies to the northern and central Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia.

Areas under the hazardous weather outlook include the District of Columbia, Arlington County, Falls Church, Alexandria, Stafford County, Spotsylvania County, northwest, central and southeast Prince William County, Manassas, Manassas Park, Loudoun County and other localities.

The Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang forecast for the DC region calls for storms coming from the south bringing showers Thursday afternoon with localized heavy rain and thunderstorms in the afternoon and night. On Friday, showers are expected to become more isolated, but breezy conditions could linger into the weekend. Partly sunny conditions could be present during some times Friday, and sunny days are ahead Saturday and Sunday.

Here is the D.C. forecast for the days ahead, according to the National Weather Service:

Thursday: Showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 5 p.m. High near 69. Southeast wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. At night, showers and thunderstorms before 2 a.m., then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 4 a.m. Low around 58. Breezy, with a south wind 13 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. Chance of precipitation at night is 100 percent.

Friday: Scattered showers and thunderstorms before 8 a.m., then a chance of showers between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 11 a.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 68. West wind 13 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent. At night, a slight chance of showers and mostly cloudy, with a low around 50. West wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent at night.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 67. Breezy, with a west wind around 21 mph, with gusts as high as 34 mph. At night, mostly clear, with a low around 48.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 77. At night, a chance of showers between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. Partly cloudy, with a low around 58. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent at night.

Monday: Sunny, with a high near 79. At night, mostly clear, with a low around 56.
