A gym teacher was arrested Friday after assaulting a student at the Independence Nontraditional School in Manassas, according to PWC Police.

MANASSAS, VA—A gym teacher was arrested Friday after assaulting a student in the Independence Nontraditional School at 14550 Aden Road, according to Prince William County Police. Mitchell Axman, 64, of the 5500 block of First Statemens Lane in Alexandria, was charged with misdemeanor assault and battery and released on a court summons.
Around 8:45 a.m. Thursday, a School Resource Officer assigned to the school went to the gym for a reported assault. He found that Axman was instructing a class in the gym when the student, a 13-year-old boy, began to act disorderly. When Axman approached the student, a physical altercation occurred, during which Axman "grabbed the student and took him to the ground where he attempted to restrain him."
They kept struggling with each other until additional staff members intervened, and the two separated. They both suffered minor injuries. After consulting with the Commonwealth Attorney's office, the SRO charged Axman with the misdemeanor.
