Gaskins, 6 Alexandria City Council Candidates Projected To Win: Unofficial Results

Alyia Gaskins is unchallenged in the mayoral race, and six Alexandria City Council candidates lead in the November general election.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Unchallenged mayoral candidate Alyia Gaskins and the six Democratic city council candidates are leading with all precincts in, according to City of Alexandria unofficial election results Tuesday night.

Incumbents John Taylor Chapman, Sarah Bagley, Kirk McPike and Canek Aguirre and Alexandria School Board members Abdel Elnoubi and Jacinta Greene won the Democratic primary. Other candidates are independents Mason Butler and Roy Byrd and Republican Celianna Gunderson.

With all 32 precincts reporting, leading City Council candidates are Bagley with 14.65 percent, Chapman with 14.48 percent, Greene with 13.94 percent, Elnoubi with 12.69 percent, Aguirre with 12.61 percent and McPike with 11.59 percent. Voters could cast a ballot for up to six candidates in the city council race.

In the mayoral race, Gaskins has 93.42 percent of votes with all 32 precincts reporting. Gaskins, a current city council member, was unopposed after defeating Vice Mayor Amy Jackson and businessman Steven Peterson in the Democratic primary. Current Mayor Justin Wilson did not run for re-election.

Results are unofficial until they are certified by election officials.

The city council candidate that receives the most votes in the general election is typically chosen by colleagues to serve as vice mayor. The longest-serving City Council member up for re-election is Chapman, who was first elected in 2012. Aguirre was first elected in 2018, while Bagley, McPike and Gaskins were first elected to the council in 2021.

The mayor and city council are elected at large to three-year terms.

According to the Virginia Public Access Project, campaign fundraising totals are: $126,492 for McPike, $124,397 for Chapman, $98,781 for Aguirre, $96,122 for Bagley, $81,338 for Elnoubi, $70,012 for Greene, $29,947 for Byrd, $10,556 for Butler and $7,834 for Gunderson.

As of 4 p.m., the city government shared that turnout stood at 73.38 of registered voters, including mail-in and early voting.

Along with the mayor and Alexandria City Council, Alexandria voters had Alexandria School Board, U.S. Senate, U.S. House, president and a Virginia constitutional amendment on the general election ballot.
