ALEXANDRIA, VA — A Woodbridge man died in a police in-custody death in Alexandria Friday, according to the police department. Investigations into the death are underway.

Around 5:07 p.m. Friday, police had responded to multiple calls at 2875 N. Beauregard Street. Police say callers reported a man running up and down the apartment hallways while yelling and knocking on doors. Officers found a man in the hallway causing a disturbance to neighbors and attempted to de-escalate. Police made an arrest for a public intoxication offense and took him to the Alexandria jail.

According to police, the man needed medical assistance at the jail. The man died at the scene despite life-saving attempts by officers and medical personnel. Police Chief Tarrick McGuire said at a news conference Sunday that Tucker was in a sally port entryway in the jail and had not completed intake.

He was identified as Allan F. Tucker, II, 32, of Woodbridge. The medical examiner will identify the cause and manner of death as well as conduct toxicology testing. McGuire said Tucker was not armed and that there was no use of force by officers.

The police chief said he has attempted to contact Tucker's family, but investigators have got in touch with the family for the death notification.

"Regardless of the circumstances, any loss of human life is tragic," Every life in our community matters, especially when it comes to protecting the sanctity of human life. To Mr. Tucker's family, I want to personally extend my condolences and also extend my empathy.

The regional Critical Incident Response Team made up of other regional law enforcement is investigating the in-custody death. Alexandria Police's Office of Professional Responsibility will also conduct an administrative investigation. The police chief said the city's independent police auditor also responded to the incident and will be reviewing the case.

McGuire said the facts in the case "can evolve" as police continue to review body-worn video footage and other reports. Police say Tucker had a relative living at the apartment building.

"I personally understand that there is public concern about this incident," said McGuire. "I ask for your patience. I also ask that we respect the family as we go through this process to ensure that this is a fair investigation but also to ensure that the family is briefed and updated on the facts."
