Cancer-Fighting Group Asks City to Change Name of Alexandria Street
Mill Road traverses through Alexandria's Carlyle neighborhood.
ALEXANDRIA, VA -- The American Society of Clinical Oncology is asking the City of Alexandria to change the name of Mill Road, according to an application going before the City Planning Commission. The group works to "conquer cancer and create a world where cancer is prevented or cured, and every survivor is healthy." The headquarters office is located at 2318 Mill Road in Alexandria and is asking the City to change the name of Mill Road to Conquer Cancer Road.
In its paperwork filed with the City, the group explains: "The road to conquering cancer is one most will travel; 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed during their lifetime. The 40,000-plus membership of ASCO and the donors who support its Conquer Cancer Foundation are global, but our vision of a world free from the fear of cancer begins at 2318 Mill Road, where work happens daily to bring cancer to a dead end. When the foremost leaders of oncology travel to share the latest information on treating cancer and when people send gifts to support breakthrough cancer research, it would be fitting for them to arrive at Conquer Cancer Road."
Street names in Alexandria usually require a City ordinance to be changed; the proposal will go before the City Planning Commission Tuesday, Dec. 6 and would then go before City Council. The meetings are open to the public.
