Capital Beltway Single-Vehicle Crash Kills Driver In Alexandria

A single-vehicle fatal crash caused a car to become airborne and land in a ditch, according to state police.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — A driver was killed in a single-vehicle crash on the Capital Beltway in Alexandria Sunday, according to Virginia State Police.

The crash happened around 5:15 a.m. Sunday on westbound Interstate 495 at the 177 mile marker, which is near the Route 1 exit. State police say a 2017 Cadillac XTS heading westbound on Interstate 495 went off of the left side of the road and struck a guardrail and an exit sign. The vehicle went airborne and landed in a ditch.

The driver, Tyneeka L. Strickland, 34, of Capitol Heights, Maryland, died at the scene. Strickland was not wearing a seatbelt. There were no other reported vehicles involved.

There was no immediate word on the cause of the crash. The crash remains under investigation by state police.
