What's Open, Closed On New Year's Day 2026 In Alexandria
Various services will have changes or closures for the New Year's Day, which follows First Night Alexandria festivities.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Alexandrians will head into the new year starting with a holiday, prompting closures and schedule changes affecting government offices, schools, transit and other services.

City of Alexandria government offices: Closed on Jan. 1.
Alexandria City Public Schools: Closed from Dec. 22 to Jan. 2.

ABC Stores: Virginia ABC stores will close at 8 p.m. on Dec. 31 and be open from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Jan. 1.
Animal Welfare League of Alexandria: Open 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 31 and closed on Jan. 1. For animal emergencies or wildlife concerns, call 703-746-4444.
Courts: The Alexandria General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, Court Service Unit, Circuit Court and the Clerk of Circuit Court are closed on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.
DASH Bus: DASH will operate on a weekend schedule on Jan. 1. Lines 102, 103 and 104 will not run. The King Street Trolley runs daily, every 15 minutes, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Department of Motor Vehicles: Virginia DMV locations will be closed on Jan. 1.
Health department: The Alexandria Health Department, the Flora Krause Casey Health Center and the Teen Wellness Center will be closed on Jan. 1.
Hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the Child Protective Services Hotline at 703-746-5800; the Domestic Violence Hotline at 703-746-4911; the Emergency Mental Health Services or substance use crisis hotline at 703-746-3401; the Adult Protective Services hotline at 703-746-5778 or 988; and the Sexual Assault Hotline at 703-683-7273.
Impound lot: Closed on Jan. 1. The city’s impound lot is closed on all weekends and observed city holidays. Fees accrue on Saturday and Sunday, but not on holidays.
Libraries: Alexandria Library locations close at 5 p.m. on Dec. 31 and are closed on Jan. 1.
Metro: Metro will have weekday service from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 31 and weekend late night service from 6 a.m. to midnight. Fares will be free from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Dec. 31.
Parking: The Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces and residential permit parking districts on Jan. 1.
Post offices: Closed on Jan. 1.
Recreation, nature and art centers: Chinquapin Park Recreation Center & Aquatics Facility will close at 3 p.m. on Dec. 31, and all other facilities are closed on Dec. 31. All facilities are closed on Jan. 1. The Torpedo Factory Art Center is closed on Jan. 1.
Trash and recycling: On Jan. 1, trash, recycling, yard waste, and curbside food waste collections will be delayed one day. If you have a private trash collector, check with them for any schedule changes.
Virginia Railway Express: VRE will run on an S schedule on Dec. 31 and not run on Jan. 1 and 2.
