Associated Press projected Rep. Gerry Connolly (D) as the winner in the 11th congressional district race in Virginia.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — Incumbent Democrat Rep. Gerry Connolly declared victory around 9:49 p.m. on election, claiming on social media that he had defeated Republican challenger Mike L. Van Meter in the 11th congressional race in Northern Virginia. Minutes later, the Associated Press projected him as the winner.

"Thank you to the voters of the 11th District of Virginia for once again putting your faith in me," Connolly told supporters. "Serving you is the honor of a lifetime and I will fight for our values in the next Congress."

Connolly, who was first elected to Congress in 2008, sought a ninth term in Virginia's 11th Congressional District in the Nov. 5 general election and faced Republican Van Meter.
