Board of Supervisors Approves Joint Rezoning of Reston Town Center North

The Board approved an agreement with Inova for the proposed redevelopment of the 49-acre section of land into a mixed-use community.

Fairfax County’s Reston Town Center North project took a major step forward last week when the county’s Board of Supervisors officially approved an agreement with Inova for a joint rezoning of the land.

The 49-acre section of land to the North of the existing Reston Town Center will soon be transformed into “a walkable, mixed-use neighborhood with public services,” according to a county bulletin.

It is currently home to the Reston Library, Embry Rucker Shelter, Reston Police Station, North County Governmental Center, North County Human Services Building and Inova’s Sunrise Assisted Living Facility, Emergency Care Center and the vacated Cameron Glen Rehab Center.

The Board of Supervisors said it hopes to improve the existing county serves on site while integrating them into the new mixed-use community, which will feature residential housing, shops, restaurants, and open green space for the community to enjoy.

The county will aim to make the new Reston Town Center North compatible with the existing Town Center, to which it is adjacent. It also plans to expand the library, provide affordable housing and make the entire community walkable, just as the existing Town Center is.

The swap also included the county exchanging the five-acre Reston Towne Green, previously run by the Fairfax County Park Authority. In return, the Park Authority has the right to build a 90,000-square-foot recreation center in the area, according to RestonNow.
