Flood Warning Through Thursday Morning Commute

BREAKING: Flooding reported by law enforcement in portions of Stafford and Fairfax counties. Up to 3 more inches expected before noon.

STERLING, VA — Flooding has already been reported in parts of Stafford and Fairfax County, and the National Weather Service issued a flood warning for parts of the region and Washington D.C.

The flood warning is in effect for most of the region through the morning commute. Drivers should be aware of standing water. If they encounter flooded roadways, motorists are encouraged to turn around; don't drown.

Weather officials issued the warning after radar picked up thunderstorms producing heavy rain that will cause flooding.

An additional 1-3 inches can be expected through noon, according to the weather service.

The flood warning is until 11 a.m. in the District, as well as the areas of Arlington and Alexandria. The warning is until 10:45 a.m. in areas in and around Dale City, Reston, Annandale, Springfield, Fredericksburg, Fairfax, Fort Hunt, Vienna, Falls Church, Fort Belvoir, Woodbridge and Quantico.

A flash flood watch is in effect until 8 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 30, with 4 to 8 inches of rain expected.
