RESTON, VA — At its meeting on Tuesday, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors presented proclamations to the South Lakes High School's girls indoor track and field and boys basketball teams, who each won championships during the 2023-24 winter sports season.

"It's a good day for South Lakes today," said Supervisor Walter Alcorn (D-Hunter Mill), as he invited the Reston school's athletes to the auditorium floor for recognition.

The board presented a proclamation to the South Lakes girls indoor track and field team, which won the Virginia Class 6 Championship for the first time in 36 years. Alcorn recognized Coach Scott Raczko for his leadership and South Lakes' 4 x 800 relay for beating the previous record in the event by 11 seconds.

The board also presented a proclamation to the Seahawks' boys basketball team, which defeated Patriot High School 65-39 on March 9 at Virginia Commonwealth University to win the Virginia High School Class 6 State Championship.

Jordan Scott and Brian Kennedy led the Seahawks' dominant performance that held the Patriot High team to just two points in the fourth quarter, according to Alcorn, who attended the game. The supervisor also recognized Head Coach Mike Desmond for his dedication and talent.

"These teams and athletes that are being recognized today represent months of hard work and dedication, not only to their area of play but also in the classroom as well," said Fernando Belli, Fairfax County Public Schools' afterschool programs administrator, during the ceremony. "They've represented their schools, communities and Fairfax County with class and dignity and displayed a tremendous amount of hard work to get here."
