📰 News we're reading

1. Northeast weather disrupts flights, sends passengers to trains and alternative routes (nbc12.com) — Holiday travelers in Richmond are feeling the ripple effects of Northeast winter storms, crowding Amtrak’s Staples Mill Road station and scrambling for ways home. With flights canceled or delayed, some visitors are turning to trains or creative multi-city routes, underscoring how quickly severe weather elsewhere can disrupt New Year’s plans here.

2. Traveling Virginians can use Mobile ID at TSA checkpoints, some businesses (wset.com) — Richmond-area residents can now use Virginia’s free Mobile ID app at TSA checkpoints, DMV offices, and select ABC stores around the city, though a physical ID is still recommended. The digital ID stores encrypted data on your phone, requires biometric verification, and is already in use by more than 44,000 Virginians as the state works to expand acceptance.

3. Spanberger talks future of cannabis in the Commonwealth (nbc12.com) — Virginia lawmakers will return to Richmond in January to revisit how cannabis is sold and regulated, with Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger signaling support for a tightly controlled retail market. She stresses strong labeling, consumer safety, and directing any new marijuana tax revenue toward education and regulatory oversight, setting up a major debate for the 2026 General Assembly session.

4. Virginia Cavaliers beat Missouri in Gator Bowl, secure first ever 11-win season (wric.com) — Richmond football fans just watched Virginia cap a historic season, as the Cavaliers edged Missouri 13-7 in the Gator Bowl to secure the program’s first-ever 11-win year. Coming off an ACC title game loss, Tony Elliott’s squad leaned on defense, a clock-chewing drive, and record-setting kicker Will Bettridge to finish strong and set up an attention-grabbing 2026 opener in Brazil.
