Shoppers weigh in on plastic bag tax as it takes effect in Richmond (nbc12.com) — Richmond shoppers now pay a five-cent tax on each disposable plastic bag at grocery, convenience and drug stores, with revenue earmarked for local cleanups, recycling education and reusable bags for SNAP and WIC users. Residents at the Carytown Kroger shared mixed reactions, but many say the new charge will push them to bring reusable bags more often.
   

2. Federal Funding Shifts Cloud Virginia's Transportation Plans for 2026 (wydaily.com) — Richmond and Henrico are planning more Fall Line Trail segments, with about 20 miles expected to be under construction or under contract across the region by early 2026. State officials also outline how shifting federal transportation funding and new General Assembly debates over speed cameras could shape road, transit, and bike projects that affect how Virginians get around.

Richmond figure skater qualifies for national championship (wric.com) — Richmond native and VCU alum Ken Mikawa has become the first skater from the Richmond Figure Skating Club to qualify for Nationals at the senior championship level, earning a spot at the 2026 U.S. Figure Skating National Championships. The 22-year-old, who grew up skating in Richmond, will compete in St. Louis this month as part of the final selection process for the U.S. Olympic team.
   

4. Hopewell ticket wins $1 million in Virginia's New Year's Millionaire Raffle, other winners announced (wric.com) — Virginia’s New Year’s Millionaire Raffle produced five $1 million winners statewide, including a top-prize ticket sold in nearby Hopewell. Richmonders should double-check their numbers too, since a $100,000 winning ticket was sold at the Kroger on North Lombardy Street, along with hundreds of smaller prizes across Virginia.
   

5. Fairfax resident to lead Virginia's diversity efforts under Gov.-elect Spanberger (ffxnow.com) — Richmond residents may be interested that Dr. Sesha Joi Moon, a Richmond native and co-founder of the JXN Project focused on Jackson Ward, has been tapped as Virginia’s next chief diversity officer under Gov.-elect Abigail Spanberger. Moon’s background includes work in Congress, Girl Scouts USA, and endowments supporting Richmond Public Schools, and she’ll help shape statewide DEI policy as Virginia’s political leadership shifts direction.
