Fire Alarm Prompts Brief Evacuation At Alexandria Middle School

ALEXANDRIA, VA — A fire alarm prompted a temporary evacuation of one of Alexandria's middle schools Tuesday.

The fire alarm at Francis C. Hammond Middle School activated around 9:35 a.m. Tuesday. Students and staff evacuated the building for around 20 minutes and returned to the normal school day by 9:55 a.m.

The Alexandria Fire Department responded and determined it was safe for students and staff to return to school. It was unclear what caused the fire alarm to go off.

"We appreciate the quick response of the AFD. The safety of our students and staff is always a priority," said Principal Anika Buster-Singleton in a message to families.
