New Safeway Grocery Store Under Construction

The Safeway near Bradlee Center in Alexandria has been reduced to a pile of rubble.

Construction equipment is cleaning out the old and starting the new as a bigger Safeway grocery store is slated to open sometime in the second half of 2014.

The store closed last month. The new Safeway will be about 55,000 square feet with some sheltered parking and larger produce, deli, seafood, wine and floral departments, according to a company spokesperson.

There may also be a Starbucks and Bergmann's dry cleaners on site.
