Sewer Overflow Affects Stream In Alexandria, City Urges Caution

Crews have stopped a sewage overflow into a stream, but the city is urging residents to avoid contact with the stream water.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — A sewer overflow is affecting a stream in Alexandria Friday.

City staff were notified about a discharge in Timber Branch stream in the area of Valley Drive and W. Braddock Road. The city determined it was a sewer-related discharge.

A crew responded to the site to clear a sanitary sewer pipe blockage. The issue was fixed around 12:45 p.m., and the overflow of sewage into the stream has stopped.

However, the city is cautioning residents to avoid contact with the water in Timber Branch stream for the next two to three days between Valley Drive and West Braddock Road down to Hooffs Run in the African American Heritage Park. Signs have been posted in the affected areas.

The issue is not impacting household water supply or drinking water.
